5 Rules for Buying the Right Trench

Fit at the shoulder, always
The shoulder seam must sit exactly at your shoulder. Not one centimetre over. A trench coat that drops at the shoulder looks borrowed, regardless of how good the rest of it is. Everything else — the length, the belt, even the sleeves — can be adjusted by a tailor. The shoulder cannot.

Camel before khaki
The classic military khaki is correct and will never be wrong. But camel — the warmer, richer tone — is slightly more versatile, slightly more luxurious, and significantly more flattering against most skin tones. If you are buying your first trench and can choose, choose camel.

Length: at or below the knee
The short trench — the mac, the quarter-length — is a different garment. What we are talking about here is the midi or maxi length that creates a vertical line rather than breaking it. Midi hits at the knee or just below. Maxi hits mid-calf. Both work. Neither is wrong. What does not work is mid-thigh.

Spend well, but not full price
A good trench coat costs real money. It is worth it — the difference between a well-made trench and a poorly made one is visible within twelve months of regular wear.
